The situation has grown more dangerous than even I predicted. Reliable sources now indicate that the President is giving serious consideration not only to Chief Justice Surasena’s two year extension but to a sweeping extension of all sitting Supreme Court judges. What began as one man’s unconstitutional ambition is turning into a wholesale capture of the entire apex judiciary. The message to the nation could not be clearer. The executive intends to own the courts permanently. Term limits, retirement ages, and constitutional conventions mean nothing. Only loyalty matters.

The cruel irony is that the President fails to understand that Chief Justice Surasena is loyal to no one but himself. He does not serve the ruling party, the President, or any political alliance. He serves his own survival, his own occult circle, and his own unquenchable thirst for power. The President believes he is creating a compliant judiciary. In truth, he is feeding a viper that will eventually turn on its handler. Surasena’s track record proves this. He broke every convention to secure his seat. He is now breaking every convention to extend it. A man with no loyalty to the Constitution will have no loyalty to the President who enables him.

And what of Sajith Premadasa? The opposition leader remains numb. He does not speak. He does not organize. He does not even whisper a warning. The man who voted Surasena into power now watches in frozen silence as Surasena prepares to entrench himself and his loyalists for years beyond the lawful term. Mr Premadasa, your cowardice has ceased to be a personal failing. It has become a national betrayal. You have the parliamentary strength to challenge this. You have the platform of the opposition. Yet you sit idle while the judiciary is dismantled before your eyes.

Let me speak directly to every citizen of this country. If Premadasa will not lead, then the people must hold him responsible. Write to his office. Call his party leaders. Gather outside his residence. Demand that he declare his position by sunrise tomorrow. The mess that is coming, the economic collapse, the capital flight, the crony monopolies, the international isolation, all of it will be laid at his feet as much as at the President’s. He helped create Surasena. He must help destroy Surasena’s extension. If he refuses, he is no longer opposition. He is an accessory. And the twenty two million people of Sri Lanka will remember.
