Opposition Launches Campaign to Challenge Government Ahead of Local Elections
The joint opposition in Sri Lanka has initiated a new political campaign against the current administration. Leaders from the United National Party (UNP) and Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) are making bold predictions about the government’s future.
Representatives from both right-wing opposition parties have declared that the government will be toppled by December 2025 in a coordinated message. Rajitha Senaratne and Kabir Hashim have emerged as the principal voices of their respective parties promoting this narrative.
Meanwhile, Namal Rajapaksa and his Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) have adopted an aggressive stance in their opposition to the government. Similarly, Dilith Jayaweera and the Sarvajana Balaya continue to mount political attacks against the administration on multiple fronts, emphasising alleged national security threats.
The government, led by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), has responded forcefully to these challenges. JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva and other key government spokespersons have launched counterattacks against the opposition bloc. Silva has repeatedly emphasised the importance of the upcoming local government elections, projecting that the government will secure over 70 per cent of the votes.
The local government elections are scheduled for May 6, 2025, with results expected by noon. Political analysts suggest these elections will serve as a crucial barometer of public sentiment toward the current administration amid growing opposition pressure.
