COLOMBO – Hanif Yousuf, the Governor of the Western Province and a prominent business leader, has reportedly submitted his resignation to President Dissanayake, according to sources close to the Governor’s office.

Mr. Yousuf has cited personal reasons for his decision to step down from the high-profile post.

However, it is understood that President Dissanayake has requested the Governor to reconsider his decision. In the interim, the President has asked him to continue his duties and remain in office until the end of September 2025.

The development has come as a surprise in political circles. Mr. Yousuf was appointed to the crucial position with expectations that his corporate-sector experience would drive development and administrative efficiency within Sri Lanka’s most populous and economically vital province. His office has not yet released an official statement on the matter.
