For the past few months, I’ve been researching the latest smartphones and I’ve noticed how incredible common foldable smartphones are becoming. The Samsung Galaxy Z line-up phones are one of the most common ones. The new Galaxy fold4 is the latest and it might be an update from the Galaxy Z fold 3. These recent latest smartphone releases might be trying to make the argument that the future of smartphones is foldable.
Samsung’s foldable line-up is improving every year. If you have the funds and are willing to jump straight up to the latest phones, the Galaxy Fold 4 version is a great device that looks and feels awesome, you’ll have the best experience when using it. But keep in mind that it is expensive and bulky.
However, these phones are not like the traditional phones we all know. These folding phones feature improved cameras, designs, and refined hardware and software to make the device more appealing both in terms of looks and usability. Here we shall take a detailed look at the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and see if it’s truly worth the price tag of more than $1500.
Background
I’m a huge fan of Samsung phones. I remember the first phone I got when I was a little boy was the Samsung E250 which was introduced in 2006. Since then, I’ve been upgrading from one Samsung phone to another, I don’t see myself changing to another brand because this brand works perfectly for me. My most recent upgrade was to the Samsung Note 10 plus, this phone seemed to be everything I’ve ever wanted in terms of phones.
I used the Galaxy Note 10 Plus for a while and I knew it was time for an upgrade but was upgrading to the foldable version the right choice? Well, I was stuck on what to do, it was a huge step up and I needed to look at the pros and cons, right?
The first Galaxy Fold phone seemed like an awesome invention at the time, but its flawed execution led to problems which resulted in canceled pre-orders and a lengthy release postponement. When it finally arrived, people had lost trust in it.
However, Samsung didn’t stop there. They continued to improve until they invented the recent Z fold 3 which was a huge step up. Well, I decided to wait and see if there’ll be anything higher than that and I was right. The new Samsung Galaxy Z fold 4 is a big deal according to my research of course.
My first impression of the New Galaxy Z Fold 4
Yes, I made the huge decision and finally upgraded to the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. I ordered it in one of the online stores and when it arrived, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. I was super excited. The phone arrived early than expected, and it was a wonderful experience.
For someone who’s never used a smartphone before, I was thrilled by the sheer brick-like feeling of finally holding one. The bright 6.2-inch AMOLED front panel (2,316 x 904) makes it look like any other flagship phone, albeit a very thick one, and the 120Hz adaptive refresh rate is evident, offering a silky smoothness that is similar to the iPad Pro. The phone’s 7.6-inch inner display is pretty awesome, the experience is like that of using a mini tablet the difference being that the phone doesn’t have the clunkiness found in android slates.
One common disadvantage of foldable phones is the crease. However, Samsung managed to decrease its visibility in the Z fold 4 version, but it’s still noticeable of course. It is mostly visible against lighter backgrounds. I’ve been using the fold 4 version for some weeks now and the crease has been a mild annoyance on some occasions.
Design of the Samsung Z Fold 4
The phone has a book-style design with a vertical fold. Featuring an external display on the front, and a camera system on the rear, and it unfolds to reveal a large main display. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 comes with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection, and a glass rear and it features an Armour frame. The cover screen is pushed out to 6.2-inches and it is so nice to look at it. I like the design and it definitely feels different from using a normal smartphone. The experience is quite awesome. The Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 is truly a good phone and I’m satisfied when using it.
Portability
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is bulky even when closed. The phone weighs about 263g and its dimensions will also make it visible when you slip it into your pants. If you like jogging like I do, expect a battle when it comes to keeping it from falling from your pockets. The phone features an Armor Aluminum body, and this makes it feel like you’re folding a bar of soap, the most expensive bar of soap of course. So, if you decide to invest in this phone, I advise you to make sure you buy all the necessary gadgets to protect it.
Applications
Multitasking is so easy when using this phone, and it’s all thanks to the applications working so perfectly in the multi-window mode. You can use applications like Google Calendar, Google maps simultaneously and seamlessly without any difficulty. Apps such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter all work great and faster. Applications that use the camera for videos and photos also work perfectly and are impressive too.
Gaming
If you like gaming like me but have no time to use gadgets such as PlayStation etc. and prefer using a phone instead, then this phone isn’t what you’re looking for. I had dreams of playing my favorite games across the 7.6-inch main display, with 120Hz smoothness and excellent performance from the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset. Unfortunately, this phone didn’t deliver that. The phone is not good for gaming.
Conclusion
Upon using the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, I realized that Samsung’s foldable line-up is improving every year. If you have the funds and are willing to jump straight up to the latest phones, the Galaxy Fold 4 version is a great device that looks and feels awesome, you’ll have the best experience when using it. But keep in mind that it is expensive and bulky.
