The wait is finally over for the PS5 upgrade for Disney Plus which has been launched today. Subscribers will, at last, be able to stream Disney Plus content in 4K HDR quality. The upgrade follows a series of complaints about the limited output quality in the recently launched new-gen console from Sony for Disney’s streaming service. The new console was running in PS4 creating incompatibility issues and affecting viewers’ output quality, but this problem has finally been resolved.
If you have been unhappy about seeing all your favourite Disney shows and movies in 1,080p quality on your PS5, Disney has resolved this issue much to the delight of many Disney Plus subscribers.
A press statement from the Vice President of Disney Streaming has indicated the new changes that all PS5 users will notice if they have subscribed to the Disney Plus streaming service. All one will need to enjoy high-quality screen time is a stable internet connection and a Disney Plus subscription.
The announcement came through Jerrell Jimerson EVP of Product and Design for Disney Streaming who said “a key part of our global expansion strategy is to meet consumers wherever they are, which is why we’re excited to enhance both Disney+ and Star+ for PS5 users.” On commenting on how the upgrade will affect the quality of output Jimerson said “the ability to support 4K HDR video streaming on the platform will also improve the viewing experience for fans.”
Users who already have Disney+ installed can upgrade to get better quality on their PS5 PlayStation by going to their PS5 homepage then the Media tab and then downloading the native client. Downloading and installing the upgrade should be quick and once done, you can experience 4K HDR quality in all your Disney movies and favourite shows.
This move will see Disney + be in the same league as other streaming services that have already made 4K HDR streaming available on PS5 consoles such as HBO Max and Netflix. Disney Plus subscribers will be able to upgrade and watch Star Wars and Marvel shows in high quality and other Disney classics available for streaming on Disney +.
Before the press release came out, content for Disney Plus streaming on PS5 was limited to 1080p playback and with this upgrade, a user with a screen that can show 4K quality and Disney Plus membership will be able to watch all of Disney Plus best in high resolution.
Disney + streaming service came out in 2019 to join other streaming services like Amazon, Hulu and Netflix and has content that goes as far back as 1928 and popular franchise shows offering a better stock of content than its rivals.
Between now and 2019 Disney Plus has also improved on original content which users had complained about when the streaming service was compared to what Netflix offered. But shows like Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, and the Simpsons have kept viewers happy in the long run.
With new content being added every month to the streaming service, viewers are expected to enjoy the finale of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, Andor, episodes 3-8 of Dancing with the Stars, Hall of Villains and more in its line-up for October.
The upgrade to 4K HDR in Disney Plus streaming service on the PS5 PlayStation has been long overdue since its rivals in the streaming businesses have been offering this feature for a long time. The new version of the app has come a few days ahead of the changes in membership subscription prices. Subscription for membership will cost $11 per month for those in the US and these changes are expected to roll out in December.
The new software is available worldwide and has been solely designed for the PS5 allowing viewers to watch movies and shows in the glory of Ultra HD. Users with PS4 Pro will not be able to enjoy the recent upgrade. The Star Plus app upgrade is available for users in Latin America.
The Star Plus streaming service provides more localised programming apart from the general Disney content for users outside North America and has been available since 2021. The upgrade may be a bit late if compared to what its rivals have been doing, but with new shows and original content set to be available on the streaming service subscribers are happy. The 4K HDR upgrade is available without the extra charge as with other services.
Since it was launched Disney Plus viewers were able to stream big screen movies as they appeared in theatres during the Covid-19 pandemic and it remained a much cheaper streaming service among its competitors with only Apple TV Plus being the cheapest.
Unlike Netflix, Disney Plus can stream to 4 devices at no extra cost for the subscriber and the content is in 4K. While the subscription rate has remained relatively cheaper, with more original content and big titles making their way to the streaming service to meet customer demands and play on the same level as competitors, users may see gradual changes to the subscription fees.
After three years of offering streaming services on the PS5 PlayStation in the PS4 version, subscribers to Disney Plus can enjoy the same quality as other subscribers on rival services. Users will be able to enjoy better detail and contrast ratio when using Sony’s PS5 which was launched two years ago. The High Dynamic Range format though, requires extra bandwidth and subscribers will need to add a little bit to their data to access their favourite shows.
Since its launching, the PS5 has sold nearly 22 million sets by the second quarter of 2022. The news from Disney shows the growing need for streaming services to offer better and worthwhile services to subscribers. Many streaming services continue to add to their products more streaming options with extra tiers that promise more content with or without ad- ons. The upgrades are available for download for all subscribers worldwide.
